Zanzibar, 27 November 2019: The President of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Hon Justice Sylvain Oré, has conveyed his heartfelt condolences following the death of Hon Justice Jean Mutsinzi, a former Judge of the Court, who also served as President of the Court from 2008-2010.
It is with great sadness that I have learned of the passing on of our elder brother, friend and colleague, Hon Justice Mutsinzi,’’ he informed the on-going 55th Ordinary Session in Zanzibar.
‘’On behalf the African Court Judges and the Staff, I send our deepest condolences to Justice Mutsinzi’s family and the people of Rwanda at this difficult time. The world mourns with you and celebrates the extraordinary life of this remarkable human rights champion who devoted his life for protection of human rights, not only in his country, but the entire Continent,’’ added Justice Oré.
His legacy, Justice Oré said, will stand as an example to all of us to persist in our pursuit of human rights, respect and dignity of an African.
Justice Mutsinzi was among the first Judges of the African Court elected for a six-year term of office on 22 January 2006 at the Eighth Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union Held in Khartoum. He was 81.
The Court will be represented at his funeral, scheduled for Friday, 29 November.
